It's Kind of a Funny Story 2010

I love movies that surprises you at the end especially with a feeling of grandeur. When I first started out watching this movie I didn't expect much since the premise and plot seemed as familiar as Girl, Interrupted, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Patch Adams and Veronika Decides to Die. The narration, exaggerated flashbacks and quirky music have been overdone in one too many movies but as the movie progressed I still like it for it's simplicity and down to earth heart warming moments.

Craig (Keir Gilchrist) checks himself into a mental asylum just to find that he had to share it with the adults when the teenage section is being renovated. After meeting some of the other patients he panics and decides to leave but can only do that after a 5 day observation. And within those days he not only manages to find himself but help others find themselves.

I love particularly the rooftop, art and concert scene and the one with Muqtada although they were predictable. Yet, I can't help myself from getting teary eyed, wanting to jump for joy and stand up to cheer at times. The story is based on Ned Vizzini's novel which was inspired by his own experience of hospitalization.

Flipped 2010

I haven't had such a great time watching a movie in a very long while. I was hesitant to watch this because I didn't know anything about it and the title was quite misleading since it doesn't suggest any particular genre. I watched it anyway without much expectation since I have been doing that with a whole lot of other movies recently.

The opening scene itself was already a hook and from there on the entire movie kept its charm and magic right to the very end. I was teary eyed for so many scenes that I lost count. I love the scene with the tree, which was simply heart wrenching, and the one with the mentally challenged brother, and the yard, and the eggs, and the he said, she said narration.

The movie is based on Wendelin Van Draanen's young adult novel but it is set in 1957 to 1963 instead of 1994 to 2000. With Rob Reiner at the directing helm it's as good as some of his classics like Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men. Great performances by the leading stars by Madeline Carroll who plays the spunky girl with a strong head on her shoulders, and Callan McAuliffe, the all American boy who hasn't a clue about love. Although the supporting veteran casts had brief roles they could still command their presence Rebecca De Mornay to Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, Penelope Ann Miller and Aidan Quinn.

I guess if you've ever been in love secretly, appreciate the beauty of nature, had a bit of family conflicts, get moved easily by heartfelt moments, into oldies and reminisce on your childhood days once in a while you might really like this movie they way I do.

A Perfect Getaway 2009

Despite the cliche storyline and predictable path it runs on this movie is full of surprises and thrill I never expected. David Twohy who gave us Pitch Black, G.I. Jane, The Arrival, The Fugitive and many more wrote and directed this thriller that comes with humor, horror and a heck of a ride. The movie is divided into two parts which are brilliantly executed. For the first half, it keeps the audience guessing who the killers are among the many couples who are vacationing on the islands. Once it reaches the highpoint of its clue it picks up pace and there it goes charging down like a runaway train.

Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez are amazing in their roles. I love the way Twohy handles the script and direction with the little details that most people would miss. You don't have to be a sleuth to know what will happen next or who the killers are after some point into the movie. But it's not about that. It's about the way it is edited, the little snippets of clues, the magnificent backstory and the way the story is told so artistically.

I thought it was one of the most refreshing thriller-horror flicks of late. It's not a gorefest, it's not a slasher, it's not a senseless murder-on-a-rampage with silly kids running around naked (though there is this one scene) and having sex but an excellent nail biting, suspenseful and gripping tale of murder.

Grown Ups 2010

I am Adam Sandler's ardent fan until I watched this movie. I felt that many of the scenes were tastelessly done and quite insensitive on so many levels. Sandler's movies usually have a point to make and some redeeming qualities although he makes fun of other people whom he considers 'abnormal' or out of the accepted range of his narrow mindedness. This time, I felt that he has gone too far.

He made fun of a May-December romance between Rob Schneider and Joyce Van Patten to no end, Ashley Loren who plays Schneider's ugly daughter, breastfeeding, about being a vegan and a dog that had its vocal cord clipped. And at the end of the movie there wasn't as much heart as one would expect from all the discriminations Sandler mowed down on them. I am beginning to wonder if Sandler is trying to project his own inadequacies and low self esteem onto other people he considers laughable. And what with the product placement of Kentucky Fried Chicken that seem to be everywhere in the movie?

Monsters 2010

I love monster movies but not this one. It is more of an indie flick with a monster thrown in for thrills and that is definitely not the same. Anyone watching this movie would wish they had seen Clover Field instead. This is the longest and most difficult movie to watch with a dry script, cheesy romantic suggestions and cameo appearance of a squid monster with legs.

To sum it all up, like how my friend described it, the movie is a monstrosity. The plot revolves around a girl and a guy looking for a way home while a slow moving beast is on the loose. Other than that there is nothing much else going on.

Maybe my expectation was way too high as I wanted to see some fantastic bloodthirsty creature with a vengeance on a rampage. I was hoping against hope that there might be a twist, a salvation for this sluggish and mind numbing story to pull it out of the doldrums even if lasted only 5 minutes. But the last 5 minutes was such an anti climax I felt cheated by the title, the genre, the reviews and the whole shebang. I frankly don't know why everyone is making such a big hype about this movie. There are definitely better monster movies than this. Here are some of the best:

Mr. Nobody 2009

Mr. Nobody is a fantastic and beautiful movie about the past, present and future. The timeline of this movie reminds me of Donnie Darko. The plot a little like The Butterfly Effect and The Fountain. The visual reminds me of The Fall. And the overall storyline is as mind boggling as Shutter Island and Inception and has a tinge of Stay and Wristcutters. That said, you might think it's a rip off of all the movies but it's not. It's unique and charming and funny and wonderful.

I have not heard of this movie or seen any reviews or trailer and it makes it so much more intriguing and appealing. Jaco Van Dormael is a brilliant director and writer of this movie and watch out for him in a very distinctive cameo. Now that I know who he is I am seriously looking for all his works.

This is the kind of movie where someone gets totally lost and someone else tries to explain it. You'll get all the string theory, the butterfly effect theory, the big crunch theory, color theory and many more.

Jared Leto is as astounding as ever. A really fluid actor who can be molded in all forms and shapes. I have tasted blood and I love what it does to me...

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead 2007

I don't know how I could have missed this wonderful gem of a movie but I did for over 3 years since it's release. All the cast gave their best performance which is gripping, intriguing and heart wrenching. Philip Seymour Hoffman, whom I have never really been a fan of, did not cease to convince me that he can be quite a versatile actor. The only other movie I loved to hate him was Doubt. Watching Ethan Hawke fumble and stumble in his vulnerability gives you the shakes as well. Marisa Tomei shows off her assets as she deals with her depressing and complicating life. Though quite a small role, Albert Finney, wraps this entire movie up like an old classic that's not to be missed.

Kelly Masterson is now one of my favorite scriptwriters for producing this marvelously delicious movie. And to think, this is his first screenplay and it took him 7 years to peddle around until Sidney Lumet took a chance on it. How can anyone forget Lumet's direction of Murder on the Orient Express, Dog Day Afternoon, Network and Equus just to name a few.

The title is taken from an Irish saying: May you be in heaven a full half hour before the devil knows you're dead. This is a typical tale of people's sheer stupidity when they take a wrong step that leads to something worse and all because of greed. Anyone who's had money problems should watch this at least once.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy 2004

I love this movie for it's surprises. First of all, there are some really serious cameos in this movie. Every now and time you'll see a familiar face that'll make you go gaga. Secondly, it's an Apatow production. And finally Will Ferrel, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and David Koechner are in it, teaming up in KVWN-TV Channel 4 as an anchor, lead field reporter, weatherman and sportscaster.

As for the laughs, they're not too bad with some very hilarious scenes. If you know the names that are mentioned you'll know what kind of humor to expect. To me, Steve Carrell is just comical to bits where he plays a low IQ who knows not what is good for him. Adam McKay is the co-writer with Ferrell and also directed this movie besides Step Brothers, Talladega Nights and the latest The Other Guys. And the movie soundtrack is awesome!

Shutter Island 2010

After watching Christopher Nolan's Inception Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island became somewhat of anti climax for me. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a role that is so similar I sometimes forget which is which.

Yet another Dennis Lehane's creation, besides Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River, this is a mind boggling movie with twists and turns, thrills and chills that will lead you to a bad place. It is Lehane's intention to bring in the elements of a Gothic setting with a B movie and pulp feel that make this movie such a pleasure to watch.

Can't say much for DiCaprio's role, although he is as good as ever, because like I said his character is too similar to the one he played in Inception. But the mystery of the entire plot is still as beguiling and alluring. At some point though I managed to figure out the likely conclusion and then an unlikely one, but that doesn't take place until almost the end of the movie.

I know I would have enjoyed this movie much more if I had watched it first but then I wouldn't have enjoyed Inception as much then. These two movies will ultimately drive you insane.

Still, Martin Scorsese does a wonderful direction which is artistic and intriguing. Some of the scenes are absolutely beautiful, nostalgic and foreboding. Knowing that there is a lot of truth in how insanity is treated back then makes this movie even creepier and disturbing.

Whiteout 2009

You know how some movies don't work so well even at the very start of it? This is one of them. I loved the graphic novel, though I haven't completed it, for the art and story telling. Since I could compare snow bound movies like The Thing, 30 Days of Night and Smilla's Sense of Snow, I knew what to expect at the opening scene.

The casting was a little weak and so was the music score. I will always remember John Carpenter's theme in The Thing which brings in the horror and mystery that surrounds the research station. I could feel the dreadful sunless winter in 30 Days of Night. And in Smilla's Sense of Snow Julia Ormond gave us a thrilling mystery that was served as cold as ice.

For Whiteout I couldn't feel the intrigue and clock ticking tension. Although Kate Beckinsale is one of my favorite stars she seemed out of place in the Antartica. Two years in the bitter cold wilderness would have made her a stronger and tougher woman, not this pretty girl with such a sweet smile and sensuous body which is flaunted with pride. The mystery is not as wicked as it could have been and doesn't draw you in as the clues are gradually unraveled. I would have loved to see a better movie than this but I guess this will do for now.

Other snow bound movies I liked are The Shining, Fargo, Misery, Storm of the Century and one that I've yet to see: Let the right one in.

Accidents Happen 2009

I had no idea what this movie was all about when I sat down to watch it. No one spoke about it. No one promoted it. And no one did anything to make this little movie known. And by the force of the universe I actually get a chance to see it.

I love this movie. It's quirky, unpredictable and bizarre. It's all about accidents and how it starts a chain reaction to other actions. And I love Geena Davis whom I have always adored in The Long Kiss Goodnight, Angie, Thelma and Louise, Beetlejuice and The Accidental Tourist.

This movie also reminds me of Running with Scissors and a friend who is the most accident prone guy I have ever met. That's what this movie is about. People who are accident prone, namely the Conway family. And this is based on Billy Conway's aka Brian Carbee's childhood experiences, who also staged a one person show, wrote the novel and then screenplay.

While there is laughter there are also tears, and the weird thing is this is an Australian production that is set in the US.

The Legend of Billie Jean 1985

I watched this movie a long time ago on TV. As a kid what struck me most was the idea that a pretty and frail looking girl could stand up against what she believed in. I loved the idea that she transformed into a fighter or warrior-like to get her story out to the world. This momentous scene was replicated by Demi Moore in G.I. Jane and Linda Koslowski in Favorite Son.

Christian Slater makes his debut in this film, looking very much like he does even now. Helen Slater, of no biological relation to Christian, was fresh from Supergirl when she starred in this underdog story of an unintentional folk hero who gave everyone hope for equality and solidarity.

Surprisingly, after watching this for the second time around, it still feels as fresh as the day I first laid eyes on it. Although it wasn't a box office success this wonderful underrated cult classic is something for anyone who loves a taste of empowerment and taking back control. The song 'Invincible' by Pat Benatar heightens the adrenaline level and gives it the final oomph! Sadly, Benatar did not think too highly about the movie and trashed it in one of her concerts when she delivered this anthemic song.

If people actually took this movie a little more seriously probably there wouldn't be so many bullies running around brandishing their weapons of destruction while the innocent cowers away. Makes me want to go out and chop off my hair and pick up on the cause already. This movie is based on the retelling of The Legend of Michael Kohlhass where his horses are replaced by a scooter.

Brothers 2009

Excellent performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire. It's a must watch for those who love a good dramatic movie with substance and passion.

Although it is an anti war film the essence of the entire movie is centered on the relationships of a family from the effects of war. Maguire gives a frightfully disturbing portrayal of a patriotic and steadfast American soldier while Gyllenhaal is that lovable-detestable scumbag of a brother and Portman is the woman who is the caught in the space in between.

This is the kind of movie where too much revelation can spoil the entirety, so stay away from the trailer as well.

This movie is based on a Danish movie Brodre by Susanne Bier in 2004.

Law Abiding CItizen 2009

With the staggering impact of the opening scene I was hooked from the very first moment. I kept thinking it would be something like Taken and Gone Baby Gone or even better. It was at par with those movies for most part of the show but the ending killed it.

I think the idea of the bad guy/good guy got a little mixed up so in the end you don't know which is which and I can bet my bottom dollar that you'll root for the wrong one.

Jamie Foxx has yet to impress me with any of his movies and this one still doesn't cut it. Gerard Butler, however, is a wonderful actor who can easily slip into the shoes of a warrior, a lover and a Broadway singer.

There are many surprises in this movie which you may or may not like, and even a sudden twist that became a horror movie for a bit. Though the script wasn't as well written as some other thrillers it was good enough to enjoy the pace, which is, like I said earlier, until the end. It's just not plausible, not when the entire movie is based on wits. Someone should have seen that coming from a mile away.

Inception 2010

This is one edge of the seat moviea that you will have to hang on to the moment it begins. Nolan must have a cruel sense of humor when he wrote, directed and produced this movie. Anyone who likes his works previously; Memento, Batman Begins and The Prestige will know what to expect. A total mindfuck.

This movie doesn't give you any time to think or react to the thrill that seem to be overflowing like volcanic lava. Just as you are able to grasp one idea of what dreaming is all about, another concept is thrown in to confuse you and make you feel like an idiot.

There are moments when I thought Nolan couldn't pull through without being predictable but he proved me wrong. The scenes that leave you gasping for air, for more, are just amazing and they hit right between your eyes before you can even blink. So prepare yourself, watch on a big screen with fantastic sound effects, clear your bladder for the 148 minutes long feature and sit back to be overwhelmed.

The are bits of The Matrix, Dark City, The Cell, Paprika and Brainstorm (1983 film) in it but it is still one heck of a ride into the twisted mind of Nolan. Some of the best scenes for me is the one with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page at a sidewalk cafe, Ellen Page reconstructing the world, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's fight scene in the corridor and the inter cutting scenes towards the end.

After the movie I realized the audience were all struck dumb in a daze for words or descriptions about how they felt about the movie. Like I said, it must be Nolan's secret subliminal hypnotism to make us all think how he wants us to think.

There is also one small trivia of Edith Piaf.

Predators 2010

Movies like this make you want to stand up and cheer as soon as you hear the familiar 20th Century Fox introductory salutation. Everything about the predator is amazing; the creature design by Stan Winston, its mysterious origin, its assortment of weapons and the way it hunts for sport just like a human animal.

The movie started off with a nasty hooked at the beginning when preys were falling from the sky to the alien planet. The intriguing 'where the hell are we', 'what are we doing here' plot seemed like a great opening scene, but sadly as it rolled along things began to frazzle out into pieces.

One of the most disappointing moments was the lack of close up shots of the predators themselves. Their textures and facials designs were incredible but we got to see only glimpses of them from a distance and the alien dogs were not even visible at most times. The other weak subplots were the characters who did not develop well with the flow of the main story. Laurence Fishburne was easily dismissed just as Topher Grace was absolutely out of place. Only Adrien Brody and Alice Braga gave us the thrill that was needed for an action packed movie like this.

After watching so many variations of the predators in several movies the first and foremost version is still the best. No one can supersede Schwarzenegger's remarkable portrayal of being hunted by an unseen creature in the tropical jungle. Still, a predator is a predator and that is worth another movie.

I Love You Philip Morris 2009

I almost lost all hope for Jim Carrey after his watching his entire acting career wasted on shallow, predictable and dense movies. It only liked him in Man on the Moon, Yes Man and now this. Taking on the role as Steven Russell, the true con artist, impostor, and multiple prison escapee, he wins you over hands down for being that sweet, charming and witty Carrey we know.

Although the plot has somewhat been dramatized, the heart of the story is still an intriguing and emotionally stirring one. Both Carrey and McGregor are excellent actors and they will have you believing in their love for one another.

At most parts the movie is fast paced, hilarious and suggestive but decent. Due to some distribution rights dispute and the romantically charged gay theme, this movie may never be released in cinemas worldwide and get the straight to DVD stamp. It will be such a waste to have a great movie like this swept under the carpet.

But with today's technology and social networks the fans will find this true piece of gem sooner or later.

House Broken 2009

I guess this movie didn't get very good reviews from what I've read so far. It's supposed to be terrible and unfunny but I'd say otherwise. To me it wasn't as bad as 'Did you hear about the Morgans?' or 'Superbad'. This is actually a little more laughable than some other comedies which are better left alone.

Danny DeVito's days of comedies have taken a back seat and he is just mediocre here just as he was in 'When in Rome'. Two new comers, at least to me, Skyler Stone and Ryan Hansen (whom I only saw in Party Down) are two brothers who have overstayed their welcome in their parent's home. Their dad, Devito, finds a way to get them out and as you can imagine, all hell broke lose.

It's the kind of comedy that is built of disgust, sex jokes, idiocy, slapsticks and gay humor. If you're not offended by any of those than probably it's good for a few laughs here and there on a lazy day/night with nothing much to do but to relax that ol' gray matter.

Capote 2005

There are two camps. One is pro Capote and another is pro Infamous and I am proud to be in the latter group. After watching Infamous, Capote is nowhere close to it. Then again as I said, there are two camps.

Where Infamous is heartwarming and heart wrenching that runs with sexual undertones, Capote is a dry and bland crime drama. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a little too overrated for this movie but he is over the top for Doubt. Toby Jones who played Truman Capote in Infamous is way much better.

Both the movies are based on Capote's research for his new book 'In Cold Blood' that lead him to all kinds of obstacles and thus, ending of his own writing career. It was this book that literally devoured him from writing anything just as good or as powerful. The two movies with similar plot however differ greatly in the nuances that make Truman Capote who he really was. Watch Capote and watch Infamous and see which camp you prefer but ultimately the story within the story of this amazing tale is still as mind blowing whichever way you look at it.

She's Out of My League 2010

It is very rare to find a romantic comedy that is both heartwarming and funny. Although it is written by the same writers, Sean Anders and John Morris, who also wrote Sex Drive and Hot Tub Time Machine, which I didn't quite fancy, this is quite a hilarious comedy with a right dash of romance.

Jay Baruchel is like a younger version of Ben Stiller and I've never really noticed him in his previous movies like Tropic Thunder and Night at the Museum 2, which incidentally has Ben Stiller in it as well. Baruchel's plays a good lead about the loser who gets the girl.

There are many instances in the movie where it reflects a lot on life and how people in general assess one another that eventually sabotage their relationships. The question of self esteem and confidence of one's own individuality is very well executed here that doesn't go overboard.

Some of the most memorable moments are the shaving scene, the one with the dog and the family dinner.

The Crazies 2010

Small town terror is back. You know what to expect when it's a remake of George A. Romero's 1973 film of the same name. From the grandfather of Zombie comes a tale of the crazies.

People in a small town, Odgen Marsh, are losing their sanity little by little. One by one they begin to act out their delirium and kill for the sake of killing. The movie starts off like a beautiful dramatic tale of the good folks of a small town but all that changes and everything turns ugly. The mystery of an unknown force observing the town makes you wonder who or what is behind all this. But it doesn't twist you like a Twilight Zone episode can.

It's quite a pleasant watch for a zombie movie which is not so zombiefied. Unlike the brutal and senselessness of most zombie movies, this one has less of the gore and more of the art of survival. Breck Eisner, if it is correct according to news, will also be remaking Flash Gordon and Escape From New York. Though his direction is quite commendable, he could use with a better script. But then again, what's a zombie going to say? "I'm going to eat your f***ing brains now?

Peter and the Wolf 2006

Based on the composition of Sergei Prokofiev this little stop animated gem won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2008. It is not one of the best stop animation but it is indeed a work of art. If it hadn't been for Prokofiev's marvelous and playful composition the story would have been like any other children's fairy tale.

Each character is assigned to an instrument for dramatic and individualistic purposes. Peter is associated with the string instruments, the bird is the flute, the duck is the oboe, the cat to the clarinet, the wolf to the French horns and the grandfather is represented by the bassoon.

There are numerous recordings and adaptations of this boy who caught the wolf and they serve as a delightful bedtime story however it is told. In this Suzie Templeton's version the ending differs from the one we used to know and it's a joy to watch.

Solomon Kane 2009

I haven't seen a sword and sorcery movie for a while and also an epic, or at least semi epic, movie with picturesque scene on wide screen. the first thing that came to mind, looking at the actor (James Purefoy) with his stringy, soiled hair was Christopher Lambert in Highlander which is incidentally quite similar.

It feels as though you're reading through a comic strip and it's no coincidence since it is based on a pulp magazine character by Robert E. Howard. It has the feel of Beowulf, The 13th Warrior, Conan the Barbarian (which is also Robert E. Howard's creation) and others like Braveheart. Set for a trilogy, this movie prepares Kane for adventures that can be felt foreshadowing is path.

In this first segment Kane's origin is revealed and his journey to redemption takes a turn into the unknown. This is basically a damsel in distress plot with nothing much said about why she needs to be rescued other than what the story tells us.

The movie started off quite impressively with the well choreographed fight scenes and the prodigious panorama and dramatic visuals. But the conclusion is a little anti climatic as it stops abruptly without too many moments to savor as much as the first half had.

With the second and third installments on the way, they would be something to look forward to if they hold true to the blood of the puritan adventurer.

This is one of the best shows I have ever seen this year. Cillian Murphy is excellent in every way. I liked him in The Dark Knight, Sunshine and Breakfast on Pluto. His acting skills here is no exception and is truly admirable.

The thing about this movie is, I can't reveal anything because it would be revealing too much. All I can say is it all happened when a train crashed into John Skillpa's backyard. The supporting actors, Ellen Page, Susan Sarandon and Bill Pullman, are as indelible as the mark they left behind in all their previous films.

This movie makes you squirm with fear, bogs you down with empathy and then drives you insane with question after question. It should have been a more publicized movie but instead it went straight to DVD. I wonder why?

This is a cute little movie that reminds me of Three Coins in the Fountain, the 1954 romantic drama, but the similarity goes only as far as the fountain and the coins.

Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel are good together on screen but their romance is not as well developed as it should have been. You know they're there to fall in love, you know they're going to take it a step further but you just don't go with them to the ends of the world to be together.

It's easily lost in a barrage of romantic comedies that flood the silver screen every year. With so many familiar faces and names, you'd think they'd pull this lovey-dovey bandwagon together but they don't. All is wasted on Angelica Houston, Danny Devito, Don Johnson, Lee Pace, Will Arnett (30 Rock), Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite) and Dax Shepard (Employee of the Month).

All there is to this movie is how cute she looks and how hot he gets. Well, isn't that what makes a romantic comedy a romantic comedy anyway?

Hot Tub Time Machine 2010

Yet another time traveling plot with quite a predictable outcome. Four guys in a tub are propelled back into time when it was most significant to them at a ski resort. That's just about as deep as the water goes.

The best part of the movie is the songs of the 80s and the colorful fashion that defined that decade. Rob Corddry as Lou is one annoying jerk that you will love watching or one that drives you up the wall. John Cusack is John Cusack, that lovable, adorable, sweet guy who will never grow old. The rest are easily forgettable except for Chevy Chase, the classic veteran comedian who had his hey days for over three decades.

The disgusting scenes that will make you go 'urgh' or 'yuck' are there for those who love this sort of thing. Is that a guy thing? It's fun and it's funny but don't expect any deeper understanding of what time traveling is or a heart warming story like '13 going on 30'.

Twelve Monkeys 1995

All these years I have never seen Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys, that is, up until now. After watching several of his movies I realize they are usually hosted by bizarre characters and have a very carnival feel to them. The characters, whether major or minor, are exceptionally memorable and if I'm not mistaken there seem to always be some kind of ragman or panhandler around. Willis and Pitt are both A-list actors who can pull just about anything off and they do it pretty darn well here.

The story is based on Chris Marker's short film La jetée (1962). The post apocalyptic future that James Cole (Bruce Willis) comes from is bleak and the only safe place to live is underground where contaminants of any forms are kept to a minimum. The scientists of the future believe if they send someone back to the past they could retrace the virus and prevent it from happening that would eventually kill 5 billion human beings and drive the rest into the ground.

But the first time Cole is transported back they made a mistake by sending him 6 years too early. Here is where he cross paths with Doctor Katryn Raily (Madeleine Stowe) and Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt) who will make a difference in the shaping of his future.

The movie is stylized the Gilliam way, if you know what I mean. So if you haven't like anything from Time Bandits to Brazil, The Fisher King or Dcotor Parnassus, you might find this two-hour long movie a bit of a stretch.

To me, it's not a great film but it's definitely worth a watch, especially if you like mind boggling realities and psychological twists and turns.

The Book of Eli 1010

I expected so much more from this post apocalyptic movie for its plot and production. Other than watching a Mad Max lookalike I was a little disappointed with the Fahrenheit 451 theme. One of the most visually appealing scenes is the fighting sequence in the tunnel where a play of light and darkness proves quite essential to the movie.

The Hughes brother who directed this movie also gave us 'From Hell' with Johnny Depp. Denzel Washinton, Mila Kunis, Gary Oldman and Jennifer Beals are all great stars who were under developed as the characters of the movie. You just don't get into the shoes or under their skin.

This is the kind of movie with a twist in the end, if you like twisted endings. You either go 'oh that's why' or 'that's it?'. But ultimately, I would have to disagree with the message of the story which seem pointless and bias towards religion more than the true survival of mankind itself. In other words, 'people are just plain stupid without the book of Eli'.

Samuel L. Jackson and Carrie-Anne Moss lead this suspense thriller of an unseemingly straightforward cat and mouse game of terrorism to one that is gripping and climatic at the end. The question of right versus wrong, human rights versus justified torture and a single death versus millions are some of the psychological games this movie plays.

Jackson is H, a ruthless interrogator who is famed for his unconventional methods of questioning, is up against Agent Brody (Moss) who is not at all in favor of his objectionable aggressiveness. Younger (Michael Sheen) is a self-made terrorist who has planted three nuclear bombs who seems to have planned everything from promoting the bomb scare in a video, getting himself caught and embracing the torment which he expects.

This movie questions your heart and mind, throwing you into a psychological debate of whether one action is justified from another and makes you wonder how far you would go to make things right. Although the three main characters are astounding, the weakness of the movie lies in the displaced emotion. A movie like this would make you want to scream justice at someone but it doesn't make you go all the way.

Iron Man 2 (2010)

It was definitely better than I expected. Robert Downey Jr., as usual, gave him stunning performance as a drunken, irresponsible, couldn't give a damn about the world Tony Stark aka Iron Man. He was funny, witty, adorable and lovable. Aside from him I thought Don Cheadle was a miscast for the role of War Machine Could have gotten a better star to fill those shoes. I was a little hesitant with Scarlett Johansson's role as Natalie Rushman/Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow but she got my head spinning when she started her fighting sequence which was enhanced by the camera effects and pretty awesome.

The other actors who stood out were Mickey Rourke, as the baddie, and Jon Favreau, who was also the movie director, whom I found hilarious in Four Christmases. Supporting role by Gary Shandling as the senator is something to look forward to as well.

The movie, like all action hero movies, is about good versus evil, revenge versus defense and to serve and to protect. Oh and there's an easter egg at the end of the credits. If you can't wait to find out, it's all over the internet anyway.

Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine 1965

I wanted to watch this movie because it was an inspiration to Austin Powers, especially in introducing the fembots, and also watch Vincent Price's campy acting in a comedy.

Like most comedies in the 60s and even 70s, it has more slapsticks than what we get these days. The movie started off quite promisingly and was hilariously appealing but it soon dwindled down to a dud where silent movies go to. Dr. Goldfoot (Vincent Price) is a mad scientist who creates female robots to marry them off to rich men in order to trick them for their wealth. And quite the comic is his sidekick Igor (Jack Mullaney) who seems to have more obedience than brains. Although this movie is a satire and spoof to James Bond's Goldfinger, Austin Powers on the other hand is a spoof to Dr. Goldfoot.

Although the female robots are somewhat hilarious to see, it can seem quite an exploitative movie leaning towards sexism by today's standards. I never knew Frankie Avalon as an actor except for a cameo in Grease.

If a B movie is what you expect with a cartoon chase scene and some nonsensical plot, then this is the kind of show you'd want to watch.

Never heard of it? Neither have I, unless you're a die-hard comic fan who keep tab of what's good, what's bad, what's happening and what's sad.

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is an ordinary guy who adores superheroes until one day he decides to become one. Little did he know there is much more to it than being a costume clad dude to fight crime. But once he gets a taste of hero-dom he realizes it means life or death, until he meets Big Daddy (Nicholas Cage) and Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz).

I haven't seen such a hilarious superhero movie until now. It's got the guts, the gags, the gore and a whole lotta ass-kicking gun-downing that gives it the punch that it needs to be a true comic feel. It is based on a series of comics with the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.

Matthew Vaughn, the director of Neil Gaiman's Stardust and Layer Cake, and Mark Millar wrote the script and comic simultaneously. Vaughn believed in the movie too much to want to compromise with studios who wanted unreasonable changes and he raised the money for the project himself. (Now, that's heroic)

Just as the comic is adult in nature, so is the movie and the soundtrack that comes with it is just perfect! If you're easily offended, you're gonna get a real kick in the ass for watching this awesome to fuck-some movie.

Like I always say, maybe I've seen too many movies in my life to be sweep off my feet so easily these days. I was really looking to this new Yuhang's movie since I saw his 'Rain Dogs' some years ago. I find him more hilarious in TV commercials than his dramatic and atmospheric movies as a director.

What I personally detest most is the opening scene where a life rat is scalded to death by the main character. I despise mistreatment of animals and the lack of compassion for them. I hope Yuhang realize, as a director and a writer, that an inhuman act like this cannot be justified for whatever reason. There are many ways to film this cruelty as a foreshadow of what;s to come without having to hurt even the most insignificant creature.

That said, this movie's pace and editing is much faster than most local indie movies I have seen so far. But somehow, the shadowy feel of ennui is still apparent. As for the plot, there are a few twists and turns that will lead you to an indie end. If you don't already know what an 'indie end' is perhaps if you watch a few more you might get what I'm saying.

The wonderful and pleasant surprises are the late Yasmin Ahmad's cameo appearance, bless her soul, and also the brief appearance of the renowned director, film critic, father of Malaysian animation, Hassan Muthalib.

This movie has also given Ng Meng Hui the Best Newcomer award and Wai Ying-hung the Best Supporting Actress award in the Asian Film away.

Ninja Assasin 2009

I was never a fan of ninjas or Rain, the entertainer who is a pop singer, dancer, model, actor, businessman and designer. But I am a fan of the Wachowski brothers, or is it siblings now? However, I would have given this movie a pass because of the title but was coaxed into watching it by a friend. When I realize how well the script was written after a few minutes into the movie I was enthralled and captivated by the storyline but not the gorefestivity.

Rain is a really cool guy since I last saw him in Speedracer, which incidentally inspired the Wachowskis to make this movie because of his fighting scenes. It's a very basic story of the origin of ninjas who are trained to become assassins but it's the way that the story is told that makes it worth watching.

After the movie I found out it was J. Michael Straczynski who rewrote the original script and this is yet another wonderful and prolific writer I truly admire who has written for films, TV, novels, short stories, comics and radios. And who could forget what Harlan Ellison told Straczynski when he was a struggling writer, "The reason your stories are being rejected is because you're writing crap. Stop writing crap!". And Ellison also claimed that The Terminator is taken from 2 of his stories from The Outer Limits 'Soldier' and 'The Demon with the Glass Hand'. And to sum it all up he grabbed Connie Willis' breast at the Hugo Awards in 2006.

And as for the movie you can expect lots of ninja-styled fight scenes, gruesome slash and kill effects and a little bit of heart in the right places. Not a bad effort for an overdone concept about ninjas.

The Princess and the Frog 2009

This time Disney takes us to New Orleans with the bayou and gumbo, voodoo and hoodoo, mardi gras and jambalaya, which incidentally reminds me of The Carpenter's song.

Everyone knows the story about the princess and the frog and this is just another version set in the birthplace of jazz. The songs are great, the funnies are laughable and the characters are enderaing but then it's just not all there. That have been the case for animations of late, especially Disney ones. It's as though all the right ingredients are there but one of the spices is missing, and you just can't seem to taste it.

Raymond, or Ray the firefly, is the most adorable and charming character for me. The others who are equally good are the Shadowman, Charlotte and Louis but too little time are spent on the characters for us to get to know any of them. Animations these days are too fast moving to allow us to savor and absorb the emotional moments and beautiful designs.

The Japanese still hold true to their art form of anime and it doesn’t feel like we’re in a rush to get the movie over with because everything else in life is a warp speed.

Most of the character designs are not as clever or original as the previous animations except for the very few. I can see resemblances of Beauty and the Beast and Jungle Book scattered all over the place. Whatever happened to the passion of Disney?

Action, violence, shoot, kill, more violence, predictable, guy movie and even more violence. That's what this movie is about. If you love video games, this is exactly it in the form of a movie. Like Avatar and Surrogate this is another plot where the control of one's actions manifest in another body, in this case a human's.

Gerard Butler, still looking great, is Kabel, a man on death row, who joins the Slayers to fight for 30 battles to get his freedom. And as all movies go, nothing is what it seems. At least three quarters of the movie is focused on fighting or gunning somebody down or explosive scenes and held together by a thin storyline supported by Ludacris, Kyra Sedgwick and Michael C. Hall.

Gamer is a no brainer but a kick-asser. Written and produced by the team Neveldine & Taylor who also gave us Crank and Pathology.

One of the most interesting scenes I find is the bizarre 'I've got you under my skin' rendition which suddenly seems like a musical while a fight sequence is underway.

Inglourious Basterds 2009

Quetin has so far never failed to impress me and his triumphant continues with this movie. Not knowing what to expect, except for the fact that it is a war movie, which is not my favorite genre, I was totally won over the moment the opening scene appeared on the screen.

The dialogues are exceptionally well written and I love his choice of soundtrack especially David Bowie's Putting Out Fire, which was written the the remake of Cat People back in the 80s.

Brad Pitt is no doubt one of the best actors who can steal any show with his good looks and brilliant acting. But in this movie the one you may want to look out for is Christoph Waltz who plays a German Colonel whom you will learn to hate right from the very beginning and the things you want to do to him would be unthinkable.

Although it is a very long movie you will hardly feel the length of it since there are just about so many great scenes for you to savor and of course not to mention the spectacular scene at the end.

Quentin Tarantino is a fantastic writer and director with so many credits to his name but he is quite underrated compared to the bigger names who make blockbusters that are mindless and overly exaggerated.

Whip It 2009

This is one of the best shows I've seen in years. I have never heard of it and I have no idea what it is all about. Ellen Page plays the lead role supported by Drew Barrymore and Juliette Lewis, all three are great and lovable actors in my book.

Roller Derby is the main story line with team spirit, family and relationship drama and quirky humor is injected into this wonderful story telling of passion, love and strength. The movie is directed by Drew Barrymore and written by Shauna Cross who also wrote the novel which it was based on.

I have seen a whole lot of overrated dud recently which made movie going a dread but it's movies like these that saves the day for me. It is fun to watch, it is moving and the multi layered characters are just unforgettable. Jimmy Fallon plays the cool, sexy yet skanky announcer, Alia Shawkat does a great best friend anyone could ever have character and Marcia Gay Harden is the perfect example of a mother who is all dominating yet with a heart.

This is my second best treat for the year after Inglorious Basterds.

I haven't seen something so romantic and bittersweet for a while. The last I remember was Rachel McAdam's The Notebook, The Lake House and P.S. I Love You.

Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana are so beautiful together in this excellent romantic drama of love and lost and lost again. Bana is man with a genetic disorder who is caught between times of the past and the present without any knowledge of why and when this strange phenomenon occurs. Somehow these star-crossed lovers meet and their love is tested through time and age.

Audrey Niffenegger who wrote the book was inspired by her own experiences and relationships.

Where the Wild Things are 2009

I was just not impressed with the creature designs and the entire movie. I would have liked a more crispier colored world or one that is darker but this is something that is caught in between. It didn't protray Maurice Sendak's world in his children's picture book of the same name. Although I didn't think much of the book I did like it enough to want to keep a copy and I thought McFarlane did quite a good job on the vinyl toys a while back.

The only thing I liked best about the entire movie is Karen O's peculiar sounding music and lyrics. She is what made the movie a worth watch throughout the dry and destitue moments when nothing really makes sense. Karen O is the lead singer of Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs born of a Korean mother and a Polish father.

The Age of Stupid 2008

This is yet another one of the brilliant documentaries about global warming and climate change. It's more literal, thought provoking and down to earth than Al Gore's self inflated An Inconvenient Truth. Pete Postlethwaite introduces this movie in his monologue as though he is having a conversation with us through a computer screen from the year 2055.

Although what you are about to see is nothing new, it's the way it is presented that will grab your attention. Clips of the past blunders man has made, catastrophes, different lives and interviews are interspersed to help you get the feel of reality that we all live in. And at times, making us see how stupid we had been and how stupid we still are even until now.

It saddens me to see the greatest failing of being human, which is ignorance, and how we try to justify what we do with excuses intertwined with ego. Will we ever learn before it is too late?

This movie makes me feel so sick of humanity and the I only thing solution I can think of is total annihilation.

The Cove is the most horrid place for dolphins to be in a town call Taiji tucked in Japan. This is one corner of the world where dolphins are massacred by the thousands, 23000 per year to be exact, for unnecessary meat.

Ric O'Barry who has been an activist for the freedom of dolphins started out being the trainer for the celebrated dolphins used for the TV series, Flipper. For years he made his fortune from the mammals he trained until he became close to them, especially one known as Cathy. From then on he realize by capturing these seafaring creatures don't belong in captivity no matter how well they are taken cared of.

Just like Peter Benchley who perverted people's idea of sharks in Jaws who later became an advocate for shark conservat, Ric O'Barry has turned against his past to reeducate people about the necessity to save the dolphins.

This is a harrowing documentary with graphic footages of the merciless slaughter of these animals which are considered too high in mercury content to even be consumed. As they dig deeper into the controversy, more and more dirty deeds are exposed and the amount of politics that go behind the scene is nauseating.

Sometimes, watching documentaries like these, I just feel so helpless, hopeless and ashamed.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra 2009

Yes, I am finally watching this after all the hype is gone. This movie is so fast moving you won't even have time to wonder how good or bad it is. I guess this must be the latest subliminal control movies are aiming for. Get us to sit there while they wipe out our intelligence the quickest way possible.

I've never seen G.I. Joe cartoons or have much knowledge about them but this movie is a real kickass whopper. It's always on the go but of course my observant eye will notice something like Dennis Quaid getting another role where he hardly moves much just like Pandorum. I know he is old but did they have to play his age up that way?

And of course the other thing I just have to laugh at is the security code pad which is still in use even when hologram, invisibility, UFO-like flying machines and state of the art weaponry are showcased to the max. If you like a Stephen Sommers action, in the vein of Deep Rising, The Mummy and Van Helsing, you'll enjoy this.

Zombieland 2009

There's not a single year that goes by without a zombie or a vampire movie. Though I'm not much of a zombie fan I did enjoy movies like Planet Terror, Quarantine, Dance of the Dead, I Am Legend and now this.

I thought the first half had all the potential of being a comic horror but it soon fell into a drama which could have been another movie altogether. Columbus's (Jesse Eisenberg) narration about his rules to surviving Zombieland is hilarious. He is soon joined by a bunch of misfits who name themselves after cities; Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone from the recent The House Bunny) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin from the famed Little Miss Sunshine). With quirky characters such as them, their adventure can only be one helluva joyride.

Jennifer's Body 2009

Vampires, werewolves and monsters are my thing but these days the lame movies killed most of them almost instantaneously with weak plots, bad acting and corny scenes. But thank goodness every now and then a great movie comes along like Zombieland, 30 Days of Night, 28 Days Later and now this.

Diablo Cody (Brooke Busey) is fast becoming one of my favorite writers especially after Juno. The wit and humor in this high school horror cum monster movie is unforgettable, especially the one about watching Rocky Horror at the Bijou. Megan Fox definitely fits into the shoes of a sluttish, bimbo-ish, whiny character who is both sexy and evil.

Amanda Seyfried, who had her song and dance in Mamma Mia, is the plain Jane who befriends the most evil girl in school and who knows a dirty little secret to die for.

Although this is yet another high school horror, I love the way Cody writes the script which is funny and wacky and it will take your mind off some of its predictability.

My series of disappointments continue with Avatar, which is supposedly one of the best movies of 2009, or some say. I can't believe the usurious ratings that seem to have gone off the roof everywhere I look.

Yeah, it was a wonderful movie but I didn't think it should be rated 9/10. I guess as a Miyazaki fan I found inspirations Cameron must have got from his movies are too evident and almost unoriginal. Bits of Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Totoro are generously borrowed and the storyline has one too many similarities to Dances with Wolves and A Man called Horse.

Anyway, that is not the worst of it but the lack of depth in its characterization but the three actors who captured the screen are Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana. I thought the movie would have a lot more spiritual essence in it when I first heard about it but the ultimate vehement ending was just not justifiable.

What I love best about the movie are the creatures but then again, sadly, they all look so similar it's just such a shame.

Sherlock Holmes 2009

I was skeptical about this movie when I saw the trailer. I always thought Sherlock Holmes was not this uncouth and unkempt version of Robert Downey Jr. (though he does look pretty good and not that I'm complaining) running around solving cases in the most unconventional way.

But knowing that Guy Ritchie is the man behind this version, I had to see it for myself since I loved his Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Although we got lousy seats (but we later changed since the cinema was half full) and the movie was shown on a fullscreen instead of a widescreen, god only knows why, the movie was still intriguing and mesmerizing.

But I can't help recalling the 1985 Young Sherlock Holmes directed by Barry Levinson and produced by Steven Spielberg when it comes to the plot.

But with Ritchie's signatures of quick cutting scenes, slow motion expressions and stylized action this movie is entertaining throughout the screening. And to give it a further ass kicking awesomeness Hans Zimmer entertains you with his banjo, cimbalom, violins and broken pub piano score to further rock this new version of Holmes.

My appreciation for animation is getting harder and harder to achieve as I watch one after another factory churning them out like donuts. Even Up did not impress me like I thought it would after all the hype about it. This time round I watched another animation that has something to do with the sky and food falling out of it.

It started out like a good movie but slipped down a notch when the story unfolded into a food feast that neither gives you the appetite nor the satisfaction. Based on the children's picture book written by Judi Barrett and beautifully illustrated by Ron Barrett, the story differs somewhat from the movie.

The best character in the movie is the monkey call Steve who is the voice of Neil Patrick Harris. Other great stars lending their talents are Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Mr. T, Andy Samberg and Bruce Campbell. But we don't get very much out of their expertise except lines that could have been read by lesser known celebrities.

Up 2009

Another year for a Pixar movie to rule the world. But as for the high ratings go I wouldn't go that far. Yes, it was truly magical and heartwarming, especially the speeded up version of Carl Fredricksen's life at the beginning but after so much of buildup and heart tugging moments it slips into a fantastic world of almost non existent warmth.

Perhaps it was the fear of over dramatization that caused the movie to sidetrack and fall into the mold of familiarity that compromised its true essence. It could have been a great movie if the issues raised were explored a little more. Loss, solitary life, relationship, death and life are quickly swept away when they get too close for comfort. Unlike Asian animation, especially from the Japanese, western animations are too influenced by the demands of playing it safe.

I would have liked to watch more into the truth of the whole matter and be inspired by it than to be teased into thinking that pain is a part of life.

Land of the Lost 2009

I grew up with Land of the Lost way back then when I was still a kid. It was one of the TV series I looked forward to as much as I did The Twilight Zone, Tine Tunnel, Petticoat Junction, Lost in Space, Green Acres, Galaxy Trio, VOyage to the Bottom of the Sea and a host of other greats. More and more of the old TV shows are being adapted into films and not many turn out to be good. This is also a disappointment with the wrong casting, poor scripting and unimpressive designs. But, it still is a mediocre laugh a little, laugh a lot ride.

There are some hilarious scenes though that highlight Cher's Believe, the musical intro of A Chorus Line and the banjo moment of the original theme song. Other than that it's just one strained humor after another.

It's a semi parody, semi kiddie, semi adult oriented movie that seems to be lost for its own good.

If you have seen great movies like Aliens, Event Horizon, Firefly and even Sunshine, this movie is just another flux of the same stuff.

One of the annoying things about this movie is the long winded sci-fi talk that confuses you more than it'll clarify the bizarre happenings of the ship Elysium. You have to spend time guessing, analyzing and wondering if you got it right that such and such an event is what you think it is or is it not.

To try out even more of your patience is the pitch blackness that's in your face for the first half of the movie. It just didn't create the suspense and horror it’s supposed to and the creature design is nothing short of ordinary. For a movie with the potential of being a science fiction suspense thriller, there isn't much for you to be on the edge of the seat for. It's just another movie that could have been better but it's not.

A crew in the Elysium spaceship wakes up to find themselves trapped in a situation worse than death. To survive they have to battle monsters and their own demons.

And I so loved the poster...

Karaoke 2009

So whaddaya know I watched the most talked about movie amongst friends and people I know. While this is Chris Chong Chan Fui's debut feature it is also only the second Malaysian film to be screened in Cannes after 14 years since Kaki Bakar.

For a 75 minutes movie there is a lot of subtlety and beautiful shots which can only be described as Malaysian. If you know what this country stands for and would like to project itself as you will understand some of the witty scenes like a particular karaoke video, the motorcycle scene that passes by the house and the ridiculous close up acting of expressions. They could be euphemisms or double entendres of sorts but only the director will know what he wishes us to see.

It's difficult to place this movie even when it comes to the end. You could either like it for what it is or find it hard to fathom for what it is. I like it for it's simplicity and unexpected scenes and the end will definitely make quite a conversation piece.

I haven't cried so much for a movie for a very long time. The music from the cello, the very moving scenes and beautiful ceremony performed for the departed somehow add the tears to my eyes.

This movie is so simple and down to earth it just blows your mind away with it. The story is basically about the art of 'encoffinment' or a ritual to clean and dress the dead up for the funeral service. It is based loosely on Aoki Shinmon's autobiography Coffinman: The journal of a buddhist mortician.

There are many messages about life and death in this movie that makes it heart warming and wistful. It really makes you look at death from another perspective and see how beautiful it can be. But to take 10 years to make a movie like this? I'm wondering why does it have to be that long.

Terminator Salvation 2009

The first Terminator has always been one of my favorite scifi movies but I like all three nevertheless. And when the new trilogy was announce, especially with Christian Bale in it, I was looking forward to them even more. And on top of that I realized it is directed by McG, one of the names I see popping out as an executive producer for Supernatural, who also directed Charlie's Angels and We Are Marshall (love this movie to shreds).With the build up fueled by The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which is sadly axed when it got better, there is no way a Terminator fan can escape the rise of the machines.

With so much anticipation I finally get a chance to watch it on a small screen. Comparatively, it is nothing like the first trilogy. The original by James Cameron has the element of mystery and surprise when it was first introduced to the big screen. The second is an all action packed ride with state of the art special effects and the third is ... well, it could have been better.

This time round, set in the post apocalyptic world, the adult John Connor (Christian Bale) is finally battling the machines like he was meant to. Strangely John Connor's role is downplayed and the first T-800 (Sam Worthington) steals the show instead and very good at that also.

The verdict: It's a great movie on its own with spectacular machines we have never seen before in the previous franchises. And I also love the line "I'll be back" which came as a quaint surprise.

Night Train 2009

It's one of those movies with a very short story feel, which incidentally reminds me of the latest movie 'The Box' based on Richard Matheson's short story Button, Button. However, the storyline is closer to the TV series 'The Ray Bradbury Theatre' about a bunch of strangers who see what they want to see over a cliff into the horizon and also Clive Barker's Weaveworld where Shadwell, the salesman, can sell you anything you wish for a price.

Out of the three main characters Leelee Sobieski plays a schizophrenic girl who is both angelic and devilish while Steve Zahn and Danny Glover are just mediocre typecasts who are easily forgotten. If the characterization is as well developed as Sobieski's perhaps the movie would have taken a different turn altogether. The premise in the train also brings to mind Murder on the Orient Express, Cassandra Crossing, Midnight Meat Train and all other train movies.

The plot is almost identical to Shallow Grave, except for the small differences that make one American while the other British. Other than the fast paced entertainment and action sequences the potential to develop the story into a full blown original piece is lost the moment they discover the secret of the box.

The Box 2009

I watched this movie for two reasons. One is Richard Kelly and the other is Richard Matheson. Kelly's memorable Donnie Darko is a dish well served as his directorial debut (although he had 2 previous short movies prior to this) and I'm still waiting for something that is at par with it. Southland Tales is recommendable but not quite there. And now The Box, based on Matheson's short story, Button, Button, is his next work of art but it may not go down well with the audience at this time and age.

First of all the movie is set in the 70s without the cheesiness and gaudiness of the 70s. It is focused on the dreary weather of Richmond, Virginia where colors and glam is not a part of 1976 but you can see Cameron Diaz and James Marsden looking very dated with their hairstyle and clothes.

If you know Matheson’s short works, it’s usually meant for The Twilight Zone or The Night Stalker or Star Trek. Although this movie is only 115 minutes it seems very long because of the pace which emulates Donnie Darko’s.

The story could be summed up in one question, Would you push the button? The extended version of this bizarre and mind boggling tale is a mixture of Kelly and Matheson so you need some brain work to help you get through the movie. The conclusion is a powerful twist which will have you gripping with a surge of emotions as you try to assure yourself that this is only a movie.

Being a disaster movie fan I simply love them since the Golden age of Disaster films from the 1970s and of course even way before that. The names synonymous to this genre goes to Irwin Allen who is the 'Master of Disaster' and now it belongs to Roland Emmerich.

Don't expect plausibility or accuracy, intelligence or predictions but a fun and exciting ride all the way. For 158 minutes you don't want to go to the wash room or even blink if you can help it because there's so much to miss even if you do. If you're sensitive about race, religion or nationality then the only thing to do is to make you own disaster movie and save whoever you think ought to be saved.

Otherwise, sit back and gawk at the special effects, near misses, adrenaline rushes, edge of the seat thrill and nonstop action.

The Fourth Kind 2009

Looks like the Blair Witch Project, 1999, that started this hand held camera craze with 'never been seen before footages' is back in style. Anticipating a highly evolved version of this similar plot this movie is quite a disappointment with nothing much to offer. It only reminds me of Animal Planet's Lost Tapes. It could have worked much better if this movie was shown back in the 90s.

The reenactment is based on Dr. Abbey Tyler's (Mia McKenna Bruce) interview and some recordings of her patients with similar experience in Nome, Alaska. They each wake up at around 3 in the morning while seeing a white owl in the room. It seems like an ordinary occurrence until she uses hypnotherapy on one of her patients that unleashed more than his nightmarish fears.

The built up of this movie is slow and doesn't really get to the culmination of the truth which is so so in the end. There are some really shocking and horrifying scenes but they don't make up for the rest which are awkward and passable. If you are a Milla fan probably you might want to follow her acting career otherwise there's nothing much to miss.

Star Trek 2009

I've only recently became a trekkie ever since I watched the reruns of Star Trek: Voyager some years back. From then on I have been searching high and low for the original series, the animated series and all of its movies just to keep up with this incredible franchise. It was also Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth that got me into looking up his contributions to Star Trek and The Twilight Zone.

Although I had anticipated this latest updated version by J.J. Abrams I couldn't have found a better time to miss it on the big screen. Nevertheless it is still amazing in so many ways from story to effects, casting and acting. This movie marks a new phase for the trekkies with a more upbeat and action packed pace and a more dynamic young crew.

The presence of the original Spock (Leonard Nimoy) makes a whole lot of difference that bridges the old and the new. For those who remember or have seen the original series and its casts it will be well worth the time getting to know them all over again in their youth and prime. The lighter side of the gathering of the crew and their unfortunate battle with human's life long enemy, the Romulans, make an interesting plot. There are also some unusual romantic angles that are never seen before.

Another 2 more seuquels are in the making and this may be yet another trigger for better and more intelligent scifi movies in the future.

Not one of the best romantic comedies ever made but it's still an enjoyable chick flick with all the necessary ingredients.

Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler share a good chemistry but is not explored enough to make it believable and romantic. Both the actors are wonderful in their head on colliding roles for one another but the missing gestures of love just didn't help the romance develop.

Abby Ritcher (Heigl) is an uptight, control freak who scares her dates away while Mike Chadway (Butler) is a cynical self made man who does not tolerate deception in relationships well. This love-hate relationship between a man and a woman has been seen countless times and some are more charming than others. Perhaps a little more spark between the main characters would have made more impact.

If you're out for a horror/slasher movie this makes a good choice with its 4 short anthologies that are intertwined together. They are; The Principal, who is not the kind of principal you'd want to know, The School Bus Massacre Revisited where a bunch of kids are dumb enough to want to revisit it in the first place, Surprise Party with Anna Paquin fresh from True Blood looking for a Halloween date and Meet Sam, my favorite, about this adorable little kid in a pumpkin mask.

Prepare yourself for some spills and chills and one night of Halloween where nothing is what it seems. The movie is based on Michael Dougherty's short film Season's Greetings. He is also the writer for X2 and Superman Returns. So obviously it's produced by Bryan Singer.

The graphic novel is illustrated by Mike Huddleston, Fiona Staples, Grant Bond and Christopher Gugliotti while written by Marc Andreyko.

The Wild One 1953

Sometimes it's hard to believe that a movie's portrayal of real life and vice versa will eventually reach your door steps sooner or later. When I finally get a chance to watch The Wild One, famed for Marlon Brando's cool and rebellious persona, I recall a few incidences we had in this country who imitated the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club (BRMC) or better known as Mat Rempits (MR) in our colloquial reference. Although the MR did not terrorize a small town, not to my knowledge anyway, they did harass unsuspecting couples, families and motorists on separate accounts.

Compared to today's violence and hostility this movie is merely a shadow of what can truly happen in a situation that goes completely out of control. Just like Rebel Without a Cause I sometimes wonder what Johnny Strabler (Marlon Brando) is rebelling against as the dialogue exclaims.

Mildred: What're you rebelling against, Johnny?
Johnny: Whaddya got?

But like any movies with hidden messages or subtext it may make more sense if you decide there is a deeper struggle within the main character than just a senseless pointless movie. Though a wonderful classic for its time it may not go down well with the new generation because some of the behavioral attributes are somewhat dated and unrealistic. I can't help but feel the stereotypical typecasting of a bad boy with a chip on his shoulder and the good girl next door who loves the taste of rebellion.

James Dean is a product of both the movie and Brando's influence just as much as Elvis Presley is. Shia LeBeouf's character Mutt Williams (Indiana Jones 4) is also seen with a garb that is completely Johnny Strabler's from the same movie.

The Life of David Gale 2003

I saw this movie because it was shown in conjunction with the World Day against the Death Penalty at the Annexe by Amnesty International Malaysia. Probably because of the many movies I have seen that revolves around the death penalty or imprisonment I didn't find this quite a good choice to showcase the perspective against the death penalty. It was more of a mystery and intrigue than a drama with emotional angles. I didn't quite care for their cause and I couldn't empathize with the characters although Kevin Spacey and Laura Linney were excellent. There's just too much over dramatization that wouldn't have been necessary. At some point I could literally read the script and figure out the ending.

Stephen King's The Green Mile has more heart to the core of its story even though it was more fantasy like than this. Another better movie, in more or less the same genre, that comes to mind is The Shawshank Redemption and Boy A, both excellent movies that drive nails into your heart. Other movies that share the same theme are Dead Man Walking, The Thin Blue Line (the documented life of the wrongly accused Randall Dale Adams), Lessons Before Dying, Last Dance, Capote, The Executioner’s Song, Let Him Have It, The Widow of Saint Pierre, The Closure Myth, Monster and A Case of Reasonable Doubt?: The Case of Mumia Abdul Jamal.

I love Alan Parker's previous movies like Angela’s Ashes, Evita, The Commitments, Fame and Pink Flyod the Wall but this one just doesn’t cut it .

Steve Zahn is a great guy to watch. Although he has never been an A-list material he is just a cute as can be. His roles have never been outstanding since he plays a typecast character that doesn't give him much to expand on. Even so, he is so good in this movie he will literally make you fall in love with him.

It's a simple boy falls in love with girl tale and boy chases girl across the country and boy ends up etc. etc. Jennifer Aniston however has taken roles where her stand offish persona seems to be the repeated yet again. She is no different here but she's just as good in it.

Their chemistry on screen is absolutely divine and endearing. It's not the usual romantic romp you might expect. Just get some tissues for the end, you might need them. It's got a great soundtrack to go with the movie too.

Body Snatchers 1993

This third adaptation is famed for its scream warning and no one can do it more chillingly than Meg Tilly, although Donald Sutherland did a watered down version in the second Invasion series.

After finally completing all four versions of the Body Snatchers I'm beginning to think that these aliens are not very bright to want to invade the human species. Though they are completely inhuman after the takeover don't they know that the homo sapiens have destroyed just about everything on earth that is causing global warming, super tsunamis, earthquakes and tornadoes? And besides there are new strains of diseases and sicknesses that might even affect them from Aids to H1N1, plague, cancer and god knows what else . Geez, don't they know all these before taking over their hosts?

Anyway, this version is set on a military base where the invasion is occurring instead of a small, obscure town in some isolated corner of the world. The aliens already have control of the army, the weapons, ammunitions and various connections to the government and you would think that they might use it to their advantage? Welll hell no! Like I said, they are not very bright are they?

One of the better scenes, besides Tilly's ultimate scream, not her frontal nudity, is the opening graphics which I thought was pretty cool. The play with the text and motion graphics is quite creative. The young and innocent looking Gabrielle Anwar takes the helm of this movie by narrating the impending doom of the human race very much like Sarah Connor in Terminator.

All the adaptations have loose ends that they just can't seem to tie. Perhaps basing a movie on Jack Finney's psychological horror story without a denouement or catharsis need a lot more work than just actions, effects and nudity.

The Boat That Rocked 2009

Trust the British to come up with yet another gem that is both entertaining and heart warming. Brilliant collection of songs from the 60s, a great storyline based loosely on true events and a wonderful ensemble of misfits make up the DJs on a boat floating in the open sea playing songs from a pirate radio station. Someone should make an updated version on internet pirates as well, that would make a story.

So these bunch of DJs hang out on their boat to play rock and roll day and night to their fans and music-starved listeners when the BBC is only featuring 45 minutes of them in the mid sixties. The question of piracy is very much supported in this out and out chaotic movie with glamorized lifestyle of free sex, drugs and rock and roll.

It's a great watch with distinctive songs that are inserted at the right place at the right time. Although it's not all true in this dramatized adventure of music it still serves a very important message about how governments are forever trying to suppress her citizens with incomprehensible laws and ridiculous regulations and they still at it to this day.

Another movie with quite similar plot is Mr. Rock 'n' Roll: The Alan Freed Story which is so under rated and under valued especially for someone who actually promoted African-American Rhythm and Blues.

Seth Rogen for the voice of B.O.B. a blob lookalike is the most outstanding and memorable voice talent in this movie. His inimitable laugh is hilarious when it's turned into this goo monster. Other than that all the other talents are lost except for Reese Witherspoon's character Ginormica which can be quite annoying at times.

The witty remarks satirizing other movies are not something new and are funny at most. One of the scenes is borrowed from The Close Encounter of the Third Kind when the alien contact is based on 5 musical notes. Other significant movies which makes up this movie is from The Blob, Attack of the 50 foot Woman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, ID4 and many many more.

This animation is merely for entertainment that you will forget with time. No grey matter to lose here.

This is one of the better gay outing movies which may be a bit dated in western world but not in the eastern world. The simple and straightforward storyline about two schoolboys falling in love is the general theme. While one of the boys is already comfortable with his sexuality the other is more concerned about his reputation as a stud and a football player.

They both go through the motions of accepting and rejecting each other, loving and hating the secrecy and agonizing about who they are in everyone else's eyes.

My favorite line in the movie:
It's only love, what's everyone so scared of?

It's a warm, gentle and honest movie that is quite free from the dramatics. The movie is based on Patrick Wilde's stage play What's Wrong with Angry?

Tsunami at Haeundae 2009

There are very few Asian disaster movies due to the lack of expertise and budget constrain. Unlike US many other countries don't produce as many disaster films as much as they want to. Since this is to be one of the first, The Host being more of a monster movie, from Korea I was looking forward to it like I used to when Irwin Allen ruled the silver screen. The producer of fantastic movies like The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno and TV series from Land of the Giants to Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel and Voyage to the bottom of the Sea it is no wonder that he is known as the Master of Disaster. Perhaps the closest I can think of today is Roland Emmerich who gave us The day after Tomorrow and yet to be seen 2012 besides his ID4 and Godzilla.

The only other Asian disaster movie I can think of is The sinking of Japan which did not get very good reviews. This Korean styled catastrophe is nothing spectacular but is a great attempt to look at disaster from an Asian point of view. The plot is very much like every other movie sharing this similar theme. Showcasing some of the characters to tug your heartstrings the build up is all about the moment when destruction strikes. There are some quite moving scenes about love and loss but not really enough to make you want to root for them.

If not for the actual event that we have been waiting for this entire movie may be a little weak to hold itself up with the subplots of emotional upheavals. But nevertheless, a disaster is a disaster no matter how you see it.

The Puppet Masters 1994

I was surprised to see that this movie is much better than I expected, especially in comparison with the 3 versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers which is similar in plot and storyline.

First of all the alien design is pretty cool and the pace of the movie is fast and exciting. And the stunts are spectacular even for this time. As for the story it's the typical alien invasion story. I don't know why there are more versions to Body Snatchers than Puppet Masters since the latter seem more like a great alien cum monster movie.

Donald Sutherland, who was also in Body Snatchers, fares much better in this movie. Eric Thal, though quite a stud, didn't really make a name for himself with his heroic act and Julie Warner, the damsel in distress, didn't go very far either. The overall acting is nothing exceptional since there's only so much an actor can do with so many special effects and stunts. The aliens are reminiscent of the face huggers and the hive is also similar to that of Aliens. But heck, it's still an enjoyable movie,

Wristcutters: A Love Story 2006

This is another one of the quikiest and most bizarre love stories I've ever seen. If 'What dreams may come' takes you to the realm of the dark reality of life after a suicidal death, 'Wristcutter' is the lighter and funnier version of the place where no one ever smiles.

Patrick Fugit plays Zia who had just cut his wrists after being dumped by his girlfriend, Desiree (Leslie Bibb) and finds himself in another deadend job in Kamikaze Pizza in the after life. One day when he chanced on a friend who tells him that his girlfriend also took her own life he goes on a journey to search for her.

He is joined by his new found Russian friend, Eugene (Shea Whigham) and later by Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) to go on the road trip with their amusing adventures and misadventures. Tom Waits makes his usual gruff looking, laid back, easy goingpresence as Kneller which incidently is the title of the short story 'Kneller's Happy Campers', written by Etgar Keret, which it is based upon.

Goran Dukic wrote and directed this wonderful cult classic which has a slight resemblance to A Boy and his Dog, Dummy and Ghost World. I thought the ending was just brilliant and so is the soundtrack.

Cheonhajangsa madonna (Like a Virgin) 2006

This is a very funny and poignant movie about transsexualism and the journey to get there. The plot is similar to Beautiful Boxer, the Thai movie based on a true story about a pre-surgery transsexual kickboxing her way to get the money for her sex change. This Korean version is however based on Ssireum or Korean wrestling with the same dream.

At most part, this movie is a comedy but it takes a drastic turn with the typical Korean violence that seem to be in every Korean movie I watch. Physical harm is like the norm or a culture to them. Since this is ficticious it doesn't have the depth or reality that would have been the key essence to the issue.

For entertainment and a little insight on transsexuality it does provide some very moving scenes of the protagonist and his relationship with his parents. And be entertained with a Korean styled rendition of Like a Virgin to feel good before leaving.

Orphan 2009

I just had to watch it to see for myself what the hype was all about. After the first half of the movie I was already feeling it was no more better than The Hand that Rocks the Cradle or The Good Son and was preparing to be disappointed. But as the story unfolds I am swept away by the twist that made a whole lot of difference to this form of horror.

Although some scenes are predictable and cliche, which may remind you of Damien in The Omen, it is still and intriguing, suspenseful and edge of the seat thriller. Isabelle Fuhrman who plays Esther is an amazing actor who can scare the daylights out of you. She is brilliant and absolutely stupendous. The other child star who stole the show with her adorable performance is Aryana Engineer who is hearing impaired in real life as it was in the movie.

Kate (Vera Farmiga) is a mother who had recently lost her third child in a stillborn birth. She is devastated and recovering from her drinking problem while considering adopting an older child to fill the loss. But little do they know that Esther (Fuhrman) is not whom claims to be.

If you know about Treva Throneberry you will find that there are some similarities in the character which could have been loosely based upon or is an unintentional coincidence. And knowing that it is difficult to write a script that is not all that predicatable I take my hats off to screenwriter David Johnson and director Jaume Collet-Serra for presenting to us this chilling trip down the dark descent of humanity.

Gran Torino 2008

Clint Eastwood is a name I have been familiar with since I was a kid. I have always remembered him in his cowboy garb strutting in dust and chaparrals, dropping one liners and looking rugged in every conceivable way. Although he had been a director way back to an unknown documentary he was mostly known for his acting in B-grade movies. In fact, I have never really liked Eastwood's movies until his direction for Mystic River and then Million Dollar Baby and then Changeling and now this.

He acts, he directs, he producers and he even co-writes the theme song that is sung by Jamie Cullum. How can a man that brilliant not be respected and embraced?

Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) is a grumpy old man who despises everyone and everything around him and is obnoxious, cynical and sarcastic. He is bothered by the fact that the parish priest is just a young virginal man who has just graduated from the seminary, his neighbors who are resettled Hmong people after the Vietnam War, his uncompassionate children and grandchildren and the lonely life he is about to lead after his wife's death.

The beautiful part of the story is the simplicity and straightforwardness of the characters with Eastwood leading in his grunting and muttering like a Walter Matthau wannabe. This warm and yet heart wrenching tale is a must watch for anyone who loves Eastwood's direction and veteran acting. You will get a dose of a little of everything from discrimination, the need to belong, family relationships, heroism and that stylized ending of movies from the seventies.

I Love You Man 2009

This is a better male bonding movie than most just as Muriel's Wedding is for the female version.

Paul Rudd and Jason Segel have good chemistry between them and the uncomplicated and down to earth storyline is something wonderful to watch.

Peter (Paul Rudd) is about to get married and realized he has no male friends that he hangs out with. After hearing his fiancé’s friends commenting about his peculiarity and the danger of being needy he desperately looks for a male friend to be buddy. He is set up by his gay brother (Andy Samberg who was hilarious in Hot Rod) and then his mom (Jane Curtin famed for her role in 3rd Rock from the Sun) to hysterical moments of blind dates.

And then Sidney (Jason Segel) happens to be at an open house organized by Peter to put up Lou Ferrigno's house for sale. They become good friends and bond almost immediately especially after discovering their taste in music for a great band call Rush. But as all relationships go their friendship is tested with the pressure of the wedding and the fiancé’s dubious feelings.

While Jason Segel stands out on his own brash comedic approach Paul Rudd is the sober milder relief. Segel was a riot in Forgetting Sarah Marshall where he literally bares all to make his brand of humor stick to your mind. Rudd on the other hand is more of the Role Model kind to showcase his talent.

Observe and Report 2009

The last time I watched a 'shopping mall' movie was Paul Blart, which wasn't very good, so I didn't expect much from this one either. But I love Seth Rogen and Anna Faris to want to watch this.

It didn't seem like much at the beginning but it did take off to another direction as the story progressed. Ronnie (Seth Rogen) is a mall cop who yearns to be a police officer and tries his damnedest to be one with obstacles coming from every direction.

There are some very moving scenes which I didn't expect but thought was brilliant. One from the 'coffee girl' (Collette Wolfe) and the other from his mom (Celia Weston). The characters are wonderfully hilarious from Saddam (Aziz Ansari) to Celia Weston, Michael Pena, Anna Faris and even the pervert (Randy Gambil).

Some of the scenes are pretty bold and surprising but overall it's a scream.

Fired Up 2009

What? Another cheerleading movie? Why the hell not?

I love cheerleading movies since the first time I saw Bright It On. It's not rocket science, hell-lo, but it's good old laughable brainless fodder for the soul. The storyline could easily pass off as a porn movie about two guys itching to get into a cheerleading camp to be with 300 girls.

Eric Christian Olsen and Nicholas D'Agosto make a pretty good team as the horny duo looking for a good time in an almost all girl event. As for the rest of the story they come as straight as cheerleading movies do.

Some of the most memorable characters are in this movie. You'll definitely remember the girl who keeps saying 'I'm just sayin', and the colorful Brewster from Calcutta, the coach who's tells jokes but he's serious and a whole lot of new jargons, slangs and one liners.

Stay to the very end to watch the extras, bloopers and a very special appearance by someone we all know too well.

Remember to chant, We are watching, we, we are watching. FU!

District 9 (2009)

Yeah I think it's overrated. I was expecting some mind blowing story line or unexpected twist but it was just what it was. Though quite an achievement on its own I can't help but recall movies like V, Alien Nation and even Signs to be the basis of what District 9 is all about.

Shot in yet another documentary style, in the likes of Cloverfield, Quarantine, Blair Witch and many many more, you can expect the unsteady camera to sweep about precariously as the movie rolls along.

The storyline, which I felt was a little like V and Alien Nation the TV series wasn't as impressive as I thought it would be. The discrimination of the new comers, known as prawns, is based on Neil Blomkamp's short film Alive in Joburg, which is also known as the movie that was born the day 'Halo' died. The reference of it's political issue is significant to that of South Africa's apartheid enforcement in the 90s and what better location than here to tell the story of an alien species seeking for asylum.

The Proposal 2009

Two of my favorite stars are in The Proposal. I love Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping, Speed and Practical Magic while Ryan Reynolds in Buying the cow, Just Friends and Chaos Theory.

This movie has a lot of similarities to While You Were Sleeping but it doesn't have the screen presence between Bullock and Reynolds like Bullock and Pullman. However, it's still a great romantic comedy with lots of laughs and heart warming moments. Bullock and Reynolds look so good together and all you want to do as audience is to root for them and play cupid.

The supporting cast from Betty (of The Golden Girls fame) is remarkable. Mary Steenburgen and Craig T. Nelson are veterans who make their screen presence felt even though their roles a small. And the rest of the casts seem like a My Best Friend's Wedding, The Family Stone and While You Were Sleeping family members and friends who are just being themselves. There are some very beautiful moments in this movie which will tug your heartstrings and then there are those that will rock you with laughter on your seat.

This is Anne Fletcher's third direction with 27 Dresses and Step Up being its predecessors.

Detoroito Metaru Shiti (Detroit Metal City 2008)

Also based on a manga this hilariously outrageous movie is about the love for music and the distance you would go to make it happen.

It's a combination of Detroit Rock City, Kiss and Marilyn Manson. Negishi is a gentle and shy guy who only wants to make fashionable/trendy music that will help make other people's dreams come true. His motto being No Music, No Dream is followed throughout the movie by him and his friends. But to make ends meet before he can reach that status he has to take up a job which is completely and totally the other end of the spectrum of who he really is.

Taking on the persona of Johannes Krauser II he dons on a warrior like costume with a painted face and sings misogynistic songs about rape, murder and revenge much to his fan's excitement but not to the girl he loves.

When he is caught between being himself and the man he truly is he has to decide to continue being a heavy metal star or just the guy next door who wants to sing popcorn candy songs.

Gene Simmons makes a cameo at the end as Jack II Dark who challenges Krauser to a rock and roll showdown which is absolutely rocks the house.

This is another one of the epic trilogies which will grace the screen of 2009.

The entire movie is like a Stephen King story with flashbacks of a bunch of friends and the things they did when they were kids and how it will affect them in the future. Kenji is a convenient store owner who has to his own life to balance between looking after his sister's kid, the store and the strange terrorist attacks that seem to be linked to him.

During a reunion with his classmates he finds out from his other friends about the bizarre religious cult led by a man call 'Friend'. They also discover that one of their childhood friends, Donkey, who committed suicide is somehow associated with the cult. Soon they realize that everything that is happening to them and the country come from a time when they were kids talking about the end of the world.

Naoki Urasawa also has three of his other works adapted into anime which includes, Yawara! A fashionable Judo girl, Master Keaton and Monster.

Watchmen 2009

I found Watchmen pretty depressing. A great classic of a movie but don't expect a superheroic ending where everything is up in roses. I guess that's how Alan Moore wrote it but of course he is not pleased with it either. The film project started way back to 1986 and changed hands along the way right until recently with Zack Snyder behind the helm.

I read the graphic novel a few years back and felt that it would be near impossible for anyone to want to condense it and make it into a movie. There were just too many scenes and subplots that will not be able to be fitted in even in a 3 hour movie. But as it turned out, this is quite a good movie, though not the best.

It feels like a film noir, it's dramatized by great music from the 70s and 80s like Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changin', Paul Simon's The Sound of Silence, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and many more, it's a parody of superheroes, it's a political drama, an apocalyptic epic and it a comic book.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays a great badass The Comedian, Patrick Wilson a dorky Night Owl and Jackie Earle Haley is a fantastic Rorschach. But this epic movie running for 186 minutes in the director's cut is going to leave you confused about the fate of humanity.

Last House on the Left 2009

This remake is far better than I expected. Though gruesome and gory at times there's a little more story to it and even a teensy weensy piece of heart.

A family of three goes for their vacation in their lake house and then when the daughter takes the car to meet a friend all hell breaks loose. Kinda.

There's never a dull moment with this fast paced movie and it gets more and more intense right to the very end. For those who like surprises watch out for the ending.

The graphic scenes are truly stomach-churning, really not for the squeamish. It is a remake of Wes Craven's 1972 movie of the same name that had censorship controversy in many countries.

Knowing 2009

I didn't know what to expect. Like I said, Nicholas Cage is not one of my favorite stars but I love a mystery especially if it's supernatural or science fiction or even fantasy. But I love Alex Proyas. How can one not love a director of The Crow, Dark City and I, Robot.

This movie reminds me of Next and also The Day the Earth Stood Still. Figure that out.

John Koestler (Nicholas Cage) is a widower who finds a letter with random numbers, his son brings home from a 50 year-old time capsule from his elementary school, more than just mere coincidence. Being a professor of astrophysics he discovers that the world's catastrophes are predicted right to the very point of day and origin. This propels him to look deeper into the other dates which has yet to occur.

This movie promises a lot of spectacular disaster scenes, an intriguing twist of the tale and also nonstop action. But lacking too are the depths for us to identify with the characters. There's one scene in particular that brought back a memory about Chariots of the Gods (for those who know) and I've always loved the line that goes 'Ezekiel saw the wheel, this is the wheel he said he saw' from an old TV series in the 70s.

The Horsemen 2009

Based on the prophecy of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the book of Revelations this movie makes a good story about a spate of serial killing that leaves the message 'Come and See'.

Although it began like a movie with substance, somewhat like Seven, it soon dwindles down into the same old mold of yet another psychological horror movie about serial killing.

Dennis Quaid who plays Detective Breslin looks exhausted in most of the scenes whether it was intentional or not. His age is showing and perhaps the role of a widowed detective does make it even more believable. Ziyi Zhang has a role which could have been given to any other Asian actors, if it was meant just for Asians, because she hardly made any difference in it.

There are so many things about this movie that could have been better but coming from Michael Bay's company Platinum Dunes I guess this is all you'll get.

Drag me to Hell 2009

This show is a scare fest all the way. It's full of jolts and bolts, it's disgusting and it's also a laugh. That's Sam Raimi for you. After a long hiatus from him for his special brand of horror he's back with a vengeance. This time the special effects are more special than the good old days of The Evil dead.

One of the most effective scare elements here is the sound. It's loud, jarring and impactful to the point of traumatizing. The girl who was sitting beside me tried to close both ears and eyes but she didn't have enough hands for them.

It's strange but this is the kind of horror movie that makes you feel good when it's over. The kind you want to talk about with friends about the scariest scenes, the most disgusting moments and how many shocks-off-the-chair you had.

The plot and storyline is nothing new or great and feels a little like Stephen King's Thinner. But the execution is one helluva ride! Christine (Alison Lohman - best remembered in Big Fish) plays a bank loan officer who denied a Gypsy woman, Mrs. Ganiush, (Lorna Raver - more of a TV star) an extension since she was competing with her colleague Stu (Reggie Lee - famed from Prison Break) for a promotion to assistant manager. When the gypsy knelt down to beg for mercy Christine pushed her away out of embarrassment and there is where she made a mistake worst than death.

For it's outstanding breath of fresh air, away from the usual slasher films, this movie is an absolutely must-watch.

Mimic 1997

I've always loved this movie and I am watching it again. This time I realize it's directed by my favorite director Guillermo del Toro. Although it doesn't cut out like his best writings and directions in his latter works like The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth it's still a great watch. However he disowns this film because Bob Weinstein made demands that deviated from the script.

With startling jolts and a fast paced story telling of a tale about the man with funny shoes this movie is a classic on its own. For those who don't already know what the story is about it is good to watch without reading too much into the reviews. It has the feel of Dark City but not as mysterious as it could have been and also The Relic to a certain extend.

The only thing I find weak in this movie is the lack of depth in the characters whom you don't feel very much for. The effects are also a little dated but it's still something to look forward to on a cold dark night.

Doubt 2008

This movie will have you in doubts long after you watch it.

A relentless nun, a suspicious priest, a naive sister and an innocent boy are four characters caught in a web of accusations, lies and the pursuit of justice.

There are a lot of subtle hints to show you that nothing is what it seems. It will drive you to feel disgusted with Sister's Aloysius's (Meryl Streep) adamant witch hunt and dark ages ideals of running a school, Father Flynn's (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) implications of being a pedophile and Sister James' (Amy Adams) needs to resolve matters quickly and simplistically.

Like many recent revelations of the religious order's misconducts and bad reputations this movie doesn't quite go there to hang the Church on the steeple to be judged. It, however, will open up the unspoken suspicions for your own interpretation. You choose to believe what you want to believe. It will leave you wondering what really happened so that you will draw your own conclusions based on your own believes.

John Patrick Shanely directed and wrote the screenplay, including the stage play that it is based on call Doubt: A Parable.

So this is another remake by Michael Bay's company Platinum Dunes which is leading the trend of remaking movies for the sake of remaking movies. From The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Amityville Horror to The Hitcher to The Unborn now this.

So what's in store for the new version? Sex, kill, corny dialogue, more sex, more killing, slash, slash, shock, shock and repeat the formula all over again.

To enjoy this movie, watch it in the dark with kooky friends, put the volume on high and stuff your face with whatever fancies you.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen 2009

What's Transformer without it's cheesy bits? If the first movie has them so must the sequel. Revenge of the Fallen in war throughout. There are moments of Clover Field with the hand held camera scenes, a whiff of Terminator 3, war movies, disaster movies, TV soap operas and 3D animation spectacular spectacular.

The dialogs remain true to the genre because most of the time you'll only get to here, "Go! Go!, Run!, Get out of here!, and all the action gets in your face whether you like it or not. The only thing I saw transforming was Megan Fox into a bimbo, Shia LeBeouf into a jerk and the actors who played his parents into annoying adults.

Since I am not a die-hard transformer fan, both the movies are enjoyable to watch but the previous has more mystery to it since it was the beginning of the Autobots and Decepticons. With the humongous screen, superb sound system and endless supply of popcorns, this movie will rock you in your seat since this is all there is.

Confessions of a Shopaholic 2009

So what haven't I seen in a predictable romantic comedy that hasn't been done yet? Nothing, at least not this one. The only thing I was looking forward to in this movie is the fact that it is directed by P.J. Hogan, the director of my all time favorite movie Muriel's Wedding and that enjoyable My Best Friend's Wedding. This one is sadly far from the other two.

However, I still enjoyed the movie as one of those regular watchable romantic comedies that I don't have to hurt myself pondering how deep it will go. But Ilsa Fisher and Hugh Dancy seem more like a mismatch than a couple made in heaven. And Fisher seems to have a pretty bad hair day throughout the movie ... I wonder why?

The title says it all which doesn't leave much else for your imagination.

He's Just Not That Into You 2009

The craziness of sex, love and marriage, that's what this movie is about. Incidentally it also reminds me of a movie YPF (Young People Fucking) and also Your Friends and Neighbors, Singles, Friends With Money and so on and so on. Yes, it's nothing new but has a great cast though not everyone of them live up to their best performance since screen time is shared by Jennifer Connelly, Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Ben Affleck, Kris Kristofferson and Bradley Cooper.

Everyone who's anyone would be able to identify some of the complications, if not all, these lovers, spouses, strangers and friends experience. It's one drama after another about the same old deal that involves commitment, fidelity and the journey of finding 'the one' while being conditioned to stereotype men and women with tags.

It can be quite an overload if you're not into this kind of thing. Since the movie is based on a self-help book written by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo which is inspired by a line from Sex and the City you can roughly know what to expect. If there's already drama in your relationship you won't miss a thing.

The Day of the Triffids (1962)

I have been waiting for the chance to watch this movie forever ever since I heard about it. It's a great monster flick with all the cheese in it.

But as I observed the scenes and plots closely I realized there are a lot of other films which borrowed some of them from Shyamalan's The Happening to 28 Days Later (which Danny Boyle's acknowledges the influence) and Blindness.

But John Wyndham, the writer of Triffids, confesses that he himself is inspired by H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds when he wrote this.

The effects are dated but it still serves as an exciting scifi horror of post apocalyptic proportions. Watch it with cult classic fans with a bowl of salad and you'll enjoy it much more than you think.

Arthur C. Clarke called the novel an 'immortal story', so now I must go look for the book to read it.

The Tale of Despereaux (2008)

I didn't expect much from this low profiled movie with mediocre animation but the story is simply beautiful with many layers of ideals and messages woven in between.

It started with a rat, Roscuro (Dustin Hoffman), who changed the Kingdom of Dor when he fell into the soup of the Queen and caused one too many chain reactions that eventually caused everyone to suffer. For years the town is plunged into a darkness that made life nothing but an insipid existence for everyone until Despereaux (Matthew Broderick) is born. Defying all the traits of a mouse he is destined to bring back hope for what is thought to be lost forever.

The story is narrated by Sigourney Weaver who makes an excellent story teller with her calm, clear and inspiring voice. With a long list of stars including Emma Watson, Tracey Ullman, Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci and Christopher Llyod, most of them are lost without much recognition except for Ullman'd delightful portrayal of Miggery Sow.

Based on the book by Kate Di Camillo, Despereaux tells a wonderful tale about courage, honor, truth and forgiveness and how everything and everyone is connected.

It's one of the most spectacularly filmed documentaries of our planet earth and all its inhabitants. From an aerial point of view we are taken from the most beautiful and stunning landscapes to the most disheartening terrains.

The message is clear, profound and succinct. What have we done to earth and what are we going to do about it?

Watching the destruction of this amazing planet in the hands of homo sapiens is truly depressing and unnerving. But as it gets drearier and more despondent we are also given a glimmer of hope where some people and countries are doing something about this to rectify the mistakes we have done.

The true message of how we are all connected and linked is again reiterated in this documentary. Dividing the affluent from the poverty-strickened, the educated and non educated, nature and man are issues we have to comprehend that nothing stands alone. Sooner or later we are all affected by the change.

Directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand this documentary is a must watch for every one who's anyone who thinks he/she is not part of the whole. Glenn Close narrates while Luc Besson co-produces.

Brilliant, excellent, remarkable.

Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical 2005

This movie is as mad as it suggests. Inspired by a 1936 exploitation film of the same name everything about this film is exaggerated to the max, just like the original which was intended as a morality tale for parents but turned out to be a cult classic with unintended humor.

The Lecturer (Alan Cumming) gathers a group of concerned and anxious parents to preach to them about the evils of marijuana. He tells a story of Jimmy Harper (Christian Campbell) and Mary Lane's (Kristen Bell) wonderful, picturesque life together which plummets down into darkness caused by the drug abuse.

It screens like a 50s zombie movie at times and yet it's hilarious and sounds just as delightful to sing along. It has all the ingredients of a family movie to a slasher dasher to a soft pron to a campy romp.

Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney were driving from Oakland to LA while listening to Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage when they got the idea to stage a musical. By the time they reached LA they had already written the first song to Reefer Madness and it turned out to be quite an amazing musical although not one of the greatest. That goes to show even thinking about reefer will make you mad.
