Quantum of Solace 2008

Brutal is what this latest bond film is all about. The action scenes are amazing but they are aided by technology once too many times so it becomes unnatural and remote. Unlike the Bonds of quondam where all action scenes are choreographed with real life stunts Quantum of Solace doesn't leave much for solace.

It's the usual good guy, bad guy, car chase, boat chase, plane chase, road chase panorama all meshed up together in one great action-packed roller coaster ride. There's a little time for sex as well but not as much as the old Bond used to have. Thrillers that use intellectual jargon can be a bore sometimes when you can feel them trying a little too hard. Most of them don't succeed and fall flat on their backs. Movies today are moving too fast for their own good and it has yet to come to a point of slowing down. Storyline is pretty Bond stuff but the pace is incredibly fast.

Everyone has their favorite Bond and mine is Sean Connery for his suave and jaunty personality so the rest don't really cut it for me except for Pierce Brosnan if I had to pick one of the recent ones. The Bond movies have lost their identity since there's a flourish of pseudo Bond like Jason Bourne, of the Bourne series, Robert Langdon in Dan Brown's hero of the day and Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible franchise and even John Mclane in the Die-Hard series. The only difference is James Bond is an easier name to remember.

The thin line of familiarity between them all seems to be merging since every other story is about their prowess and world destruction. And the bond girls used to make just as many headlines as bond himself but not these days though. The glamor has somehow been toned down ... I wonder why.
